"of course" the shop assistant smiled as she lead the excited looking girl and the clearly financially stressed boy to the rings she would soon, hopefully, be selling. she could do with the raise selling an engagement ring would bring in. after all, she was going on holdiday next week, and a little extra cash could never go astray. looking at the happy couple, she asked the customary question that was almost required in this situation. "so, how much do you think she's worth?" the shop assistant asked the red-haired boy as he walked sulkily next to his girlfriend, his expression clearly demonstrating his unhappiness. "i dunno, like, ten pounds?" the shop keeper wasn't oblivious to the hurt look in the girls eyes as she tried to laugh the insult off. "oh, he's just joking. he does that often, don't you honey?" she said touching his arm, although the boy hardly seemed phase. the shop assistant was starting to feel increasingly awkward as she felt the tension rising. this couple, so young and beautiful, were obviously rushing into this. the girl was probably pregnant. the poor thing. the smile plastered on her face, she directed the couples attention to the rings, where the girls face lit up with delight and his face remained awfully deadpan. the girls didn't seem to notice though, as her face filled with glee at the rings. "oh, toby, what do you think? any sticking out to you?" she enquired with delight, to recieve a simple shrug and a "i don't know, love. it's your party." well, this was getting awkward. after about five minutes, the girl had picked a ring. she tried it on, her eyes lighting up the room with happiness. "oh, please toby! look at it, isn't it gorgeous?" she asked, only to be met with a non-commital nod. after being told the price, the couple fell silent. "you're not worth that much!" the boy said, much to the girls embarrassment. "how often will you do this, toby? please?" after an argument ensued, much to the displeasure of everyone, eventually ending with the following two sentences, which caused the girl to leave and the boy to shrug before following her. "you're just not worth showing off!" "well, then i guess the weddings off!" as the couple stormed off, the bewildered workers of the store looked at each other, and then the engagement rings. it was funny that they were literally all thinking the same thing. oh yeah, she's pregnant. about half an hour later, tobias parker and soraya lupin were lying in front of the university lake, eating some hideous fast food they had picked up from the mall and laughing about their adventures of the day thus far. she wasn't even going to lie, she loved tobias in just about every way possible. as a brother, as a best friend, and perhaps even more. lately, she had begun to notice that he was a lot more than 'best friend' material. he was kind, caring, funny... someone she felt entirely comfortable with. and while she wasn't saying she didn't feel that way with elias, there's was always the questions and doubt when it came to her boyfriend. where had he been? who had he been with? which girl would be casting a smug look in her direction next? it was so confusing, and she wasn't sure how she felt about him romantically, to be honest. despite all this though, she knew that she just loved his company. being around him could make even the darkest and cloudiest seem that bit brighter, and she loved that he would usually bring out the best in her. it was hard to imagine her life without toby now, to be honest, since he'd always been there, making her feel better or just hanging out with her, making trouble for the establishment. and although she knew that she hardly told him as such, she really appreciated his friendship and time. after all, she knew she was far from an easy person to get along with. and yet he put up with her. it was one of those 'warm and fuzzy' thoughts that she usually didn't indulge him with, but hoped that he knew she appreciated it. and him. in more ways than she could possibly even describe. today had been one of those days that had made soraya appreciate toby even more. somehow, soraya managed to coax toby into coming to the shops with her, to buy this shirt she had been stalking for some time, but hadn't had any muggle money available. but today was the day! they had made their way to the falls, only to find that they didn't have the shirt in stock, and were in the process of reordering. despite feeling slightly disappointed, she had managed to convince toby that hanging around the mall would be a good idea. and that's when the genius of 'trolling the people at the jewellery store' became a good idea. as they walked past, the idea popped into soraya's mind, and all she had told toby was to 'keep a straight face and play along'. which he did exceedingly well, she hadn't been expecting a full fledged argument in front of everyone. as soon as they'd made it around the corner, soraya started laughing and high-fived her friend, before offering to buy him lunch. oh dear god, that had been simply amazing. now feeling satisfied for the day, her and spidey had their lunch and made their way back to the uni. the lake seemed to be the appropriate place to sit and each together, since the sun was shining and the sky was of the bluest blue. how could the pair of them say no to such inviting weather? so there they were. two friends lying on the side of the lake eating their lunch, and laughing about their conquests of the day. joking and kidding around, as they always did, talking about nothing in particular and doing nothing much. soraya, who was currently laying on her stomach and picking at her french fries, her hair hanging loosely over her shoulders and her legs flicked up behind her, cast her eyes on toby for a moment. "do you think you'll ever do that, spidey? like, for reals take a girl engagement ring shopping?" |
this is probably the worst post i've ever done. i'm actually truly sorry.
