distinguishing features:
well, obviously her fire red hair - in addition to that; high cheek bones, thin frames, smile lines
style:
charlie doesn't really consider herself to have one specific style. in fact, if you were really talking to her about fashion, she'd tell you that she doesn't think she really has any style sense whatsoever. shopping is definitely far down on the list of priorities for miss charlotte, but if she had to choose a specific style to identify with, it'd be something like an urban hipster-esq chic.

personality:
it truly goes without saying that charlie is intelligent, as you have probably guessed by her house placement. while intelligence is a rather prominent quality in charlie, there are more than a few variations of this term that apply to her. charlie is an out of the box thinker, for one. she loves a challenge, and putting the pieces together, whether it be a homework assignment or just a simple logic puzzle, are what she considers to be a great delight. charlie isn't the type of girl to stick around with anything, or anyone, that bores her. she's fast placed, and requires people and substance that can keep up with her. some might mistake this for 'snootiness', but in all honesty, charlie requires someone that is on the same wavelength as her, for friendship and most certainly for a significant other.
creativity is a big part of charlie's life. she loves to express herself in numerous ways, whether it be through drawing, occasionally attempting to play music, or her favorite - writing! while charlie adores fictional writing, her true love lies mainly with the reporting aspect. her ultimate goal would be to write for the daily prophet, but in the mean time, she's perfectly content with learning more and perfecting her talent. charlie is a rather self sufficient girl, and while she obviously adores having magic, charlie would much rather do things like cleaning and cooking sans magic. the main reason for this is because she utilizes those two activities, for example, as mindless things to clear her mind. it's much more rigorous to actually scrub and stir yourself, rather than cast a spell and have your wand take care of it for you.
at first, charlie is pretty hard to warm up to. she's very shy, and doesn't really go out of her way to make friends. if you make the first effort, then she'll most definitely reciprocate and be friendly, but at first, she can be pretty darn awkward in new situations. once charlie does make friends, however, she's extremely loyal to them. charlie doesn't feel any house prejudices, so she's more than willing to befriend people from different houses. rather than have a large group of friends, however, she's more keen to make a few really close, tight friends that she keeps close to her.

history:
the earliest memory of charlotte irene abbott is standing over her mother, holding her baby sister, _____. charlie was one year old, and can still remember, even perhaps just through stories, the feeling of elation that she got from seeing her baby sister for the first time. all her childhood, charlie proudly played the role as big sister. growing up in a middle class wizarding family in london had its perks. ian, charlie's father, was a wizard, whereas her mother, alyssa, was simply an american exchange student, studying at the oxford university. ian had been living in muggle london, to be closer to the punk music scene, when he met alyssa. the two instantly fell in love, and it wasn't long before he revealed his secret - he was a wizard. obviously, at first, alyssa didn't believe him, but eventually learned to accept it, and the two married.
alyssa's one term had been that they live as close to the muggle world as possible, and that their children be brought up learning about both cultures - the wizarding and not. charlie's mother worked as a general manager for a large department store in the heart of london, whereas her father had a job with muggle liason office at the ministry. charlie and her sister were taken care of by their grandmother, hannah abbott, on the days when both of her parents worked. charlie was an independent child, who played well with others when told to, but otherwise preferred the company of her books and drawing pad.
at the age of eleven, charlie got her acceptance letter to hogwarts. she was beyond elated at this news. her father accompanied her to diagon alley to pick up all of her supplies, and come september, she was saying goodbye to her parents and hello to the grandeur of hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. while on the train, charlie made friends with nate mclaggen. the two immediately hit it off, and stayed together up until the sorting, when charlie was placed in ravenclaw, and nate in hufflepuff. the two maintained a steady friendship throughout their years at hogwarts, even when nate tried to make several passes at charlie. while charlie reciprocated the feelings, things on the home front weren't looking too good. her parents had just finished a nasty divorce, and love wasn't exactly in charlie's highest to do list. instead, she continually declined his advances, even when they graduated.
charlie spent the summer between hogwarts and college doing an internship at the daily prophet. her father was sick of her moping around in his loft, and even sicker of hearing stories from her mother in london with her new boyfriend of her moping there. he insisted that she take the internship, since he had been the one to set it up in the first place. charlie immediately loved working at the prophet, and aspires to work there as a real profession come time to graduate from college. now, at age nineteen, charlie is coming to terms with her somewhat messy home life, her aspirations, and her shaky love life. but in all honesty, she's pretty content with where she's at in her life right now.

rp example:
Water was just downright frightening.
Charlie considered herself to be a fairly brave girl. She sat through the entirety of "The Ring" in theaters only jumping a minimum of twenty five times. She rode a horse bareback once on the beach with her cousins. She was always willing to be the one to dispose of the massive spider when spotted in the basement. But when it came to swimming? No sir, no thank you. It was ridiculous, really. When you lived on an island that was nearly impossible to get off of, swimming should come easily. When Charlie was a little girl, she never really minded swimming. She would dip her feet into her neighbor's pool, and even splash around when equipped with the proper flotation devices - i.e., a blow up dolphin, dozens of noodles, etc. It wasn't really until she was around the age of seven and her cousin pushed her off the edge of the boardwalk - jokingly - and into the water, causing Charlie to nearly drown that she became completely petrified of the water, and especially being in it.
Her fear of the water had never really seemed to come up in conversation at all, so Charlie never really had to deal with it. When her gal pals would suggest a lazy day on the beach, she would always appoint herself to be the one to make sure no seagulls attacked their picnic while her friends frolicked in the water and did various water sports. She may live on an island, but swimming just wasn't the end all be all for her. However, Charlie's life on land was going to come a quick close, thanks to the two most dreaded words in nearly every high schooler's vocabulary: gym class. Charlie had basically given up on school - she was nearly done with high school, and was ready to just get a job and forget about the most bittersweet four years of her entire life. Thanks to a scheduling error on her own part, Charlie had scheduled her gym class for her senior year. Due to some gracious miracle, she had managed to make it through the entire year. However, her gym exam was going to come up any day now...the Coach had been gracious enough to allow her to bump it out into the summer. The run had been done. The push ups had been done. Stretching, kicking a soccer ball, shooting a few hoops...done, done, done. The only thing missing? You guessed it. The swimming part.
By some ironic miracle, Charlie happened to have an extremely close friend who happened to specialize in hydrokinesis. Charlie wasn't exactly sure whether this made him a regular Michael Phelps, but she didn't really care. Austin was one of her closest friends, and if anyone was going to teach her to swim, it was going to be him. Needless to say, she was prepared to make a total fool of herself. On a lazy Sunday morning, she decided that today would be the day, and rolled out of bed, groggy and stumbling around her cluttered room for her phone. She might as well text Austin and ask him for his assistance before she completely woke up and risk allowing her brain to process what she was doing. hey, she texted, her fingers moving lazily over the keyboard. i really need your swimming assistance tonight...meet me at the beach at 9? xo charlie the unicorn. She lazily sent the message, and forced herself to get up and begin the day. Hopefully, Austin wouldn't be too busy with his work schedules to help her out, but regardless, she missed him a lot. Charlie was so grateful that they had become friends last year and his absence at school was definitely palpable in her life, and possibly a reason why she felt so...blah at school nowadays.
Charlie hadn't simply made the time for their rendezvous so late on purpose. She already knew that she would look somewhere between mildly and completely outrageous, and would rather if there were as few people around as possibly. Nine o'clock meant that it would be dark out already, and hopefully, hopefully that would equate to a semi-empty beach slash teaching area. Most of the day, Charlie bummed around the house, and absentmindedly straightened up and surfed around on the internet. She found herself anxiously checking the clock most of the day - and wondered at one point, was the anxiety really completely centered around swimming, or could it be...the swim instructor himself? No, no. She pushed the thoughts out of her mind immediately. Austin was one of her best friends, and any...other feelings would just need to be kept tame, unless she was sure he could possibly feel the same way...Around seven, Charlie's parents said goodbye as they left the house for dinner. She rummaged around in the kitchen to make herself her own dinner, and once everything was cleaned up, began to change into her bathing suit and prepare for their meeting.
Once Charlie was absolutely positive that she had everything, she began the short trek towards the beach from her house. In all reality, it was only a two minute or so walk for her from her front porch to the beach, making her situation even that much more comical. Once she arrived, Charlie realized that she hadn't bothered to even check her phone to see if Austin could help...and to make matters worse, the stupid thing had died on her way over. The only thing that she could really do was just sit and wait, and if he didn't show, she could hardly blame him. Austin surely must have known how pathetic Charlie was when it came to being anywhere near the water for purposes other than bathing and cleaning. She couldn't blame him if he wanted to spend his evening doing something else, to be honest. Charlie was pleased to see that the beach was relatively empty, as she had hoped. She slid her sandals off, and shed her dress to step tentatively towards the water, allowing the salty ocean water to wash over her toes.
