It had been yet another sleepless night in the Charlton residence. Anastasia, that little girl simply couldn't fall asleep anymore these days and it didn't just have a bad effect on her, but also to her father. Who had an important job to do these days if I may add. Henry hadn't slept well for days now. Coffee started to taste like ash in his mouth and it didn't help no matter how many cups of that liquid Henry drank into his system. Nothing seemed to help with Anastasia either. her nightmares had gotten worse and neither Henry's sister or Henry himself found the way to stop the little girl from seeing nightmares. It wasn't just nightmares anymore, it had elevated into seeing ghosts or 'monsters' in her closet or under the bed. Even her fathers desperate attempts to hex all these curses away, hadn't helped at all. Henry with his knowledge of curses and ways how to get rid of ghosts or monsters had done everything to help his little daughter, but in vain. Not even a colleague of his that came to put protective spells and cleaning spells had helped. Frustration hit its peak just last night when yet again, Anastasia's cry reached from her bedroom just when he closed his eyes. The little girl stumbled with her little feet over to her father and gave him a gentle nudge.
Henry's patience was wearing off, but couldn't dismiss those big goggly eyes of hers. His sister had told him not to give up, so, wanting badly his sleep, Henry told Anastasia to go back to bed.
If only it had been that easy.
Rest of the night, Henry had to listen about ghosts and monsters while the girl simply didn't want to fall asleep. It was around 4'o clock when Anastasia finally passed out, but for Henry, it meant that he had to get up in two hours. He dragged his feet back to bed, kicking off his shoes and absent-mindedly pulled off his shirt before crashing his body into the soft mattress.
Being the Head Auror in the Ministry had it's perks. For instance, people didn't expect him to come on time at the exact moment. So, when the alarm clock chimed around 6 am, Henry simply rolled over and ignored the annoying beeping. Yet the beeping wouldn't stop. It drilled into his dreams so the man had no other choice but to open his eyes. His body felt heavy as he lifted it up from the warm bed. Henry sat up and rubbed those icy blue eyes of his. The house was quiet again. Anastasia was sound of sleep in her room. Aurora was at school and Evangeline was on her way to take care of Anastasia when Henry went to work. He couldn't take the little girl to work when she hadn't had much sleep, plus Evangeline had a day-off so Henry was off the hook.
The house remained quiet when Henry sauntered in the kitchen. The coffee maker looked tempting, but Anastasia would wake up if Henry attempted to do anything. Evangeline stepped in the house greeting his older brother with a smile. They didn't say anything since even the littlest noise could wake Anastasia up. He tiptoed at the door and took the door knob into his big hands. He was just about to open the door when a sniff reached into his eyes. Henry turned around and saw his little girl standing there in her pyjamas, staring her father.
" sweetie, go back to sleep." Henry said with a soft tone, but the little girl shook her head stubbornly. Anastasia had her pout on her cute little round face, the one face Henry couldn't resist. She walked up to her father and wrapped her tiny hands around his knee and hugged him tightly. The father picked up his little girl and felt those tiny hands around his neck.
" I'll be back soon, okay? Auntie Eva is here to take care of you." Henry cooed and gave Anastasia a kiss on top of her head. He felt a nod and put her back down. Evangeline picked her up while Henry said his byes. Mornings like these made this harder. Mornings like these brought the heaviness back into his heart and the grief came back.
Henry took breath pinching the bridge of his nose. The distinct sound of the other Aurors outside his office was making his patience wear off any minute. He still had so many things to do. Paperwork, a meeting with some of the department heads and a brief training moment with the new Aurors. Ugh, newbies. They were both a nuisance and useless in the fields, but they needed every extra men and women they could get. Today he was supposed to be somewhere else. Today he told everyone that if they needed him, he would be at the university. He didn't like teenagers. He dreaded Aurora's teenage years already, but he had no other choice but to do this lecture. After all, he was the Head Auror and they needed more Aurors. The tall, blue eyed man stood front of the empty row of seats, his papers ready and his presentation ready. They even had a big sign outside with big letters: How to be a good Auror, A lecture by the Head Auror himself. Henry wasn't sure how he thought about that, but if it interested people, he was happy about it. Henry didn't feel too excited, but he dreaded the noise and the snotty kids. He just hoped that this day would move on so he could get back to Anastasia.
