on such a quiet afternoon it was really no surprise that many of the students had chosen to leave behind the cold walls of the university and make their way outside to enjoy the glorious rays of sunshine that loomed overhead. who knew just how many more days like this they were destined to receive before the cold winds of winter made their presence known and everyone was forced to bundle up into sweaters and heavy boots in order to brave the snow that would surely follow. that was one of the things she disliked about the idea of returning to school, mainly because melina had never been such a huge fan of the cold or the snow of winter. she much prefered the heat that came from the summer months, a time for swimming and working outside to achieve the glorious tan that she sported now. and well, this was her last chance to soak up the rays before things turned bitter for them all at the university.
still, as she laid herself out on the grass and closed her eyes with a soft sigh of contentment, melina finnigan couldn't help but look back on the last few years of her life as well. she'd graduated from hogwarts with fantastic marks in transfiguration and charms, but really, were those any good in what she wanted to do with the rest of her life? hogwarts had not exactly offered a fashion class or a ballet lesson, and so she had been forced to pursue those things on her own. and even here at university, she felt like a bit of a social outcast. most of her friends and those around her wanted to be aurors, or healers, or play quidditch, and while melina loved quidditch dearly, she knew it wasn't her calling in life. there was so much more out there that people didn't consider because it was deemed to be something commonly done by a muggle, and while it made no difference to melina, it wasn't a career move that many people favoured. her own brother was rather adament that she could so something better with her life if she left the fashion and dancing behind. but melina wasn't so sure.
shifting her shoulders a little, the brunette rested into the grass easily, her eyes shut against the brightness of the sun as she lay on the banks of the lake. with both arms up above her head, she stretched a little, feeling the little creeks and aches in her back smooth themselves out and disappear. already her skin was beginning to warm, her body becoming much more relaxed outside the classroom environment in which she had been couped up for so long. being able to escape, even for just a little while, was incredibly nice. there were no lectures to pay attention to, no books requiring her eyes for reading. and there was really nobody else around her to disturb her mind from the restful state it was in. there was just the gentle breeze that pushed past her body and messed with the ends of her hair and the soft hum of the bugs that hovered over the lake. in time, she was certain that they too would vanish, a meal for the fish that were sure to lurk beneath. but for the time being, she was content to just lounge around....at least until her next lesson.

the summer months were very much desired by the students that attended the university, hardly suprising due to the fact that they residented in england. even in this supposed summer season when the temperatures were supposed to be above adverage those days were still quite rare. although most british moaned about the weather, aparently their favourite subject and a much loved conversation starter, nobody, not even fabian, could resist soaking up the rays when the sun decided to make it's appearance. fabian potter may have not been a fan of other people and did spend most of his days trying to avoid where large groups would hang out but that wasn't to say that he did not enjoy the warm weather. mostly he would wait until the early evenings, while most were enjoying dinner. however recently people had been bring their food to eat outside, otherwise simply not eating at all and fabian couldn't just stay in the shadows of the university forever. it wasn't that the slytherin particularly disliked people it was more of the fact that they tended to judge him and that was why he tried to avoid them.
he wished more than anything that he could spend even a day doing as he wished, going where ever he wanted and bacially just being himself without people even batting an eyelid. however that wasn't the way it was, people stared, spoke to one another, some even coming up to him with the usual, your harry potter's grandson speech. perhaps though fabian was a little paranoid, in fact he was very paranoid. people may not in fact be whispering with each other when around him, they may not be thinking just how much he looked like the boy he lived. perhaps people had something better to do with their lives than to worry about some random slytherin boy. maybe if fabian had just let himself known from the very beginning, made people realise that actually he didn't have that much in common with his grandfather then he could have lived his life more comfortably. however fabian hadn't lived that life, he had stayed secretive and a loner and he was becoming more depressed about it by the day. university was meant to be about making a new start. he'd never had a proper friend throughout hogwarts and he had made something of a resolution that university would be different and he would make it out of his shell. however here he was, a senior and still no one that he would consider a friend and still had yet to find someone that might become a girlfriend. as sad as it was at twenty one years of age he had yet to even hold hands with a woman, let alone anything further.
wearing a loose white shirt, red canvas cords, a pair of flip fops and dark glasses fabian started to make his way as casually as possible along the lakes edge. luckily most of the students were far too self absorbed with each other to see the male walk past them, plus he felt he had done a pretty good job at blending in with the crowd, it was fabian's forte. nervously looking straight down to the dried grass ground the male kept his hand in his cords pockets, only looking up to check for an empty spot where there were little students around. finally when he had walked far enough up the lake he could barely hear the slightly louder groups that were closer to the university. he couldn't help but be slightly envious of them. they had such a carefree attitude, had actual fun and a laugh, surround by people they actually called friends. the only time fabian ever felt slightly like he fitted in was when he was with his cousins although recently he hadn't felt like they were too sure about him any more and honestly he couldn't actually blame them. if he was someone else he would find that he was wary around him.
finally he spotted a free area, unshaded and not too many people. there were the odd couples dotted around, some on their own but they seemed to be to interested in what they were doing to be aware of anyone else. a couple were studying and one girl was seeming sunbathing. in fact fabian nearly missed that blonde girl laying down soaking up what the sun had to offer. fabian recognised her, not to talk to and he didn't know her first name but he knew she was a finnigan. her family were quite close to his own and he had seen her at parties but never been introduced. that was a long time ago now, recently fabian had tried to avoid his families get to together's as much as possible, always making an excuse. sitting down on the grass he pulled his beige canvas bag strap over his body, placing it by the side of him. he found himself looking up at the girl again though his darkened sunglasses. he was surprised that he had never noticed her properly before, she was attractive? fabian frowned, not at the blonde but more of his thought. thinking about the opposite sex being attractive was something other males did, not him. in fact he could remember the last time he had considered this thought. he pulled out a muggle book on the history of ancient rome, flicked through the pages but found his stare go back to her. god she'll think he's some kind of pervert, although he found he couldn't help himself. for some reason he found that he was slightly drawn to her although he wasn't sure as to why. there was so much not happening around her that melina was almost lost in her own little world. the short chirping of the birds was in her ear, the sweet smell of the wind grazed the insides of her nose as it brushed its way gently across her skin and pushed stray strands of her blonde hair to the side. it was the best feeling she had felt in quite sometime now, the feeling of being totally relaxed and in tune with the world around her. there was precious little to distract her from her restful moments there on the bank of the lake, most of the other students were far closer to the university then she was, having chosen the furthest edge of the lake to make her resting place on. and perhaps that was the brightest thing she had done for a few days now, she thought to herself as she laid her hands against the white material of her shirt that seperated her hands from her stomach. adjusting to the chaos of the university had been much more taxing then she had originally anticipated it would be, with the dorms and the classes and such.
inhaling deeply, she didn't seem to move at all when she heard the rustling of the grass that accompanied the approaching footsteps, figuring that they would in turn fade into the distance as whoever it was wandered right on by her. but to her surprise, the footsteps came to a stop only a short distance away, another sound slowly coming to replace it. she opened her eye only enough to glance out of the corner of it, watching as the boy did indeed take a seat a short distance away from her, his eyes hidden behind a pair of rather dark sunglasses and therefore not entirely familiar to her memory. she watched long enough to see him set a bag down beside him and pull a book from its depths before she closed her eye again and settled back into the grass, figuring that as long as they were both silent, neither would pay the other much notice at all.
pulling one arm from her stomach, melina lifted her head enough to set her arm back in the grass beneath her head and then fell back gently on it, tilting her face a little to allow the sun a chance to warm that section of skin. and for a moment, she was just as comfortable and at peace with the world around her as she had been only moment before. yet something was tugging at the back of her mind, like that annoying little voice you cannot shake when you're doing something you know you really shouldn't be doing. but it wasn't that type of voice that urked her now, disturbing the otherwise quiet surroundings that she had settled herself into. no, it was something different, something she hadn't felt before. it was then that her eyes instinctively opened and she discovered the source of her discontent, spotting a sight that was all too unfamiliar to the girl.
his eyes, the eyes of the boy who had approached from the university. he was watching her.
sitting up, it was almost as if an electic charge had shot straight up her back and forced her body into that position, having her up before she realized what was going on. "i'm sorry, am i bothering you?" she asked, tucking a loose strand of blonde bang behind her ear. it seemed like such a foolish question to ask aloud. after all, she had been the one to take that spot on the bank before he had even left the university, so why should she be concerned with bothering him? but something in his gaze immediately told her that he wasn't annoyed...no, it was something else, something she couldn't quite put her finger on.

shit. inwardly he was cursing at himself over and over. the moment he saw the girl sit up from where she lay his eyes instantly inverted away, his heart palpitating strongly in his chest. there was something quite demanding in her voice but then there was some softness too, although which voice he should follow he had no idea. fabian actually considered standing up and running away from the girl right at that moment. obviously a rather cowedly decision but one that entered his mind none the less. although he did come to the decision that that probably wasn't one of his best ideas and instead stayed put, gaze still not on the girl. she didn't sound too entirely pissed with him, did she?
fabian sucked in his lips, unsure what move to make or whether he dared to reply. why the hell had he taken so much interest in her? why did he have to keep staring at her like he did? it was so uncharacteristic of him. without really thinking he found himself looking back to her, his finger tip rubbing nervously across the pages of his book and then he made eye contact. he couldn't remember the last time he had crossed eyes with a stranger, he was generally very good at avoiding others gaze. he swallowed, attempting to find some moisture in his mouth but instead it felt like sandpaper in his throat.
"i um.. i-i..." he coughed, finding suddenly he had an inability to breath or even talk properly. "y-you-your not b-bothering me," fabian finally managed to get out with the faintest of smiles, though the embarrassment was obvious as his face flushed red. of course it could have been mistaken with catching too much sun but due to the sudden change it was sort of obvious and fabian could feel it, his clothes were getting a little more sweatier than they had been a couple of minutes ago. "i'm sorry," he finally managed to reply, in the attempt to compose himself again, "i um.." he paused to ponder of a decent excuse, after all he could hardly tell her the reason he was staring was because he found her to be very attractive, "..i thought i recognised you, took me a while to realise, your a finnigan, right?" of course he knew that already, "i mean your family.." he smiled, a rather goofty smile that probably didn't help with the whole situation that he had currently got himself into.
ooc, i don't normally respond to threads just based on the other's play by but i couldn't help myself xD [atrb=border,0,true][bg=a1ada3][atrb=width,500,true] |

well, this was certainly new. melina had met many people over the course of her life, people of many different shades and backgrounds who had their own stories to tell and way of dealing with the world. But in this instance, she wasn't entirely sure of what to make of the boy who sat such a short distance away from her, his speech pattern clearly distressed by the fact that she had caught him looking over at her. it was a new instance for her, to find anyone staring at her like that, without any sign of intent that boy's commonly wore on their faces when they looked at someone of the opposite sex. so why was she so unnerved by the fact that he didn't appear to want to ravage her right then and there? surely that was a good thing, right? mentally kicking herself, melina allowed her eyes to venture forward and watch him carefully, trying to drink in all of the details that she could surmise based solely on his physical appearance.
he was older then she was, of that she was certain. his face seemed vaguely familiar to the girl, and yet it taunted at her memory like some distant shadow that refused to be pulled into the exposing sunlight. and he appeared to be older then paxton as well, but he certainly wasn't a professor or anything of the sort, so he had to be as old as her eldest brother. and the lack of school clothing that he wore did nothing to tell her which house he belonged to, not that it really mattered, she supposed. after all, while she was a gryffindor student, her brothers had each been sorted into hufflepuff and slytherin, so there was no room for her to discriminate between the houses even if she had wanted to, though it was something that still seemed to be a rather common frame of mind. regardless, there was something in his face that was poking at her brain, something that was so familiar it was actually rather frustrating that she hadn't yet been able to pick out where she had seen him.
his smile was rather cute, she thought softly to herself as a small one of her own formed on her lips. and it was easy to tell that he was rather embarassed by the fact that he had been caught looking at her, the tell-tale signs of pink appearing in his face to accompany the stammer in his words. "it's okay," she said gently, hoping her words might perhaps put him at ease after such an awkward encounter. "don't worry about it. i guess i'm just not used to having people look at me for longer then a couple of seconds." and it was true. people seemed to regard her for only a few seconds before they turned back to whatever it was that they were doing at the time, whether it was to a conversation between friends or to gawk at a sexy redhead as she wandered by them. melina had never thought herself to be anything special, and to be honest, she had been rather unsure of how to react to the fact that he was paying her even the least bit of attention after sitting so close.
"um, yeah," melina said, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear again. the stupid thing just didn't want to stay put. "i'm melina finnigan. and you're...." she snapped her fingers, suddenly remembering. "fabian, right? fabian potter? my brother's mentioned you before...said something about your grandfather, though i'm not sure what." she shrugged. if she hadn't remembered, then it clearly wasn't all that important and probably not worth mentioning in a conversation. meh, whatever, she thought to herself. if it was that big of a deal, she was sure that her brother would remind her later....if she mentioned the fact that she had met fabian out by the lake. and the chances of that happening were not all that likely.
