”Do I look like a truth kind of guy to you?” Scott asked with absolute indignation and contempt at his best friend who was sitting opposite him. It was the summer of (insert date here) and Scott Avery was sitting up an enormously large tree with Autumn Blake. At ten years old, with his entire life in front of him, Scott felt like this was the best summer ever. Both he and Aus had gotten their letters, and after months of suspecting she had been a witch it was confirmed they’d both be going to Hogwarts next year. Aus didn’t have to go to muggle school anymore and they got to hang out every single day. Their summer was quickly disappearing in a haze of imaginary wars against aliens, zombies and warlocks, and with games like Truth and Dare, Chinese burns and tag added to fill in the boring parts of the Wars. It was safe to say that this summer had brought the already close friends closer together, and Scott couldn’t imagine his world without Aus in it. Their friendship meant more to him than almost anything else, and he cherished these days with her more than he cherished the power and wealth of his family. After all, when he was with Aus, his life was carefree, easy. He could laugh when he wanted, say what he wanted, knowing he wouldn’t be judged. This was what Scott would consider paradise.
Well, it was almost paradise. There was the little thing that Scott’s parents didn’t like Aus. She wasn’t allowed at their house, and Scott still wasn’t supposed to be talking to her. It had all come to head last night, when Scott accidentally mentioned her name. Of course, his parents knew who the Blake’s were. The muggles who were contaminating the neighbourhood. Scott didn’t bother to mention that his family lived in a muggle area and so they were technically contaminating the normality of the suburb. He didn’t see it as wise. His parents were too angry, and in a way, the Blake’s were different. They were different because they had befriended the Avery boy; something that mother and father Avery were not all too keen on. The night before Scott found himself in a tree with Aus, he had been asked to remain at the dinner table while his siblings were dismissed. The white, strained look on his mother’s face and the confused, but slightly intrigued look in his father’s eyes had scared Scott somewhat. He had done a lot of bad things in his life. Jumping off a broomstick and breaking several bones, playing hide and seek in the mall for seven hours nonstop –he remains a champion and refused to apologise for that- he knew that he worried his parents. But nothing he had ever done had got this much of a reaction. His siblings had never been sent away before, and his mother had never looked so upset. His father’s voice had never been so low, so calm… But then again, he had never befriended a muggle. As the conversation progressed, his mother became more hysteric, demanding that Scott never be allowed to see her again. She wanted to send him away to his cousins for the rest of the summer… Scott couldn’t understand it. They talked about the Blake’s like they’d give him some horrible disease, like being a muggle was contagious. The fight lasted for several hours before the Avery’s ten year old son defied his parents for the first time. He knew that it was time that he taught his parents a lesson. He packed a small bag, stuffed it with his most valuable things and some clothes, before storming out. That night, he had slept in the tree the two were now talking in freely. His bag was still hanging on a branch nearby, containing everything from the night before. But that had long been forgotten now. All that existed in the small world of a ten year old boy was his impending dare that his friend had to offer him. And considering he had just got her to lick the tree branch, he as banking on it being a good one. The small lingering thought existed in the back of his mind, though, ruining the fun atmosphere of their day. He had to go home sometime. And when he did, he would be in trouble.
But, in all honesty, Scott didn’t care. Autumn Blake was his best friend, and his parents would never be able to change that. After all, Olivia was much too proper to climb trees with him and play ruthless games of Truth and Dare, to spend their summer days doing things that he wouldn’t expect even his most adventurous friends to do with him. They were his family, they had to love him and be there for him. But Aus was his friend, and up until recently he was convinced that he was going to lose her when he went to Hogwarts. It wasn’t something that he wanted to risk. But as he looked at her slightly frustrated face as she thought through possible dares, he became worried. What if, when he went home, he was sent away? What if they put a charm or something on him that meant he couldn’t see Aus? Did that exist? ”Oi, would you run away with me? Like, if we ever had too, would you come?” He asked, interrupting the game for his insecurities. He kind of felt weird asking it- last week they had watched some pathetic muggle movie where the girl had asked a guy if he’d run away with her if he needed too. He did, and they got married and lived happily ever after. He didn’t want anything like that –ew! Girls had cooties and Scott was never going to get married- but he couldn’t bear the thought of not getting to play fun games or waste his time with her like he did now. As much as his parents hated it, Autumn Blake was an important part of Scott’s life. And it would stay that way for as long as Scott could help it.

now the relationship between her and smartie were unusual. well, it was pretty typical seeing every other movie about a childhood romance but they weren’t romantic. not that she knew of. she didn't like to think of him as anyone but her best friend ‘cause smartie and her and them together? that was just grosso mosso! they were supposed to be best friends and nothing more. all she really liked doing was hitting him and pushing him around. he was one of the only guys who liked to hang out with her that was actually her own age. aus was just one of those girls who liked to play with the older guys. she liked to tag along but really, she wanted to lead the group. she was just that sort of person who wanted to be the leader, not the follower. that wasn't her job. she had better things to do than just sit around and watch people make decisions for her. please. she wanted to make her own choices! she wanted to lead the games and everything! and that’s when smartie came in. she had been with her brothers at the time, trying to hop onto one of their backs while the other sprayed her with the hose. "briaaaaan!" she shouted, her hands clinging onto his shoulders for dear life. she knew that if she didn’t get her rubiks cube back, she might just explode. she hated it when they did this. just because they were twins did not give them the right to go taking her stuff and bossing her around! they always did that! it just wasn’t fair! two against one! "c’moooon, you already ate my brownie and my soda pop! i wanna play with my rubiks cube!" aus jumped, somehow managing to get brian to panic about dropping her. as much as they were annoying, they did love their sister very much. jason grabbed her by the waist, dragging her to the nearby lake. their day in the park was supposed to be calm. their mum had told them to leave the house because of the guests that were being invited. she couldn’t do anything if she had three kids fooling around all over the place. "no no no no no noooo!" aus hollered, her voice growing more and more desperate by the second. it only took a moment for a football to be coming out of nowhere and like the boys they were, both brian and jason looked up and fought each other to swipe it out of the air. and in all of a few miliseconds, aus was dropped into the lake causing there to be a huge splash. when she came up to air, she saw the twins laughing their heads off and a black haired boy looking rather guilty in their direction. aus remembered asking what his true intentions had been and while he said he found an abandoned 'strange ball' in the park and wanted to try it out, she always thought it was to try and get her dropped into the water. the whole irony was she later on came to the conclusion that since his initials were sma, his name had to be smartie. so thus. there was the start of a beautiful frienship.
she knew her brothers liked to tease her about it. it as in her and smartie. he was the person she has news she wanted to share. he was the first person and probably the only as well. he always knew what to say, did all the right reactions, it was perfect. it was like having the brother she always wanted... let’s pretend brian and jason didn’t count at this point. the only embarrassing thing was whenever he went to her house. it was her whole family that made fools out of themselves. and the thing was, they went to her house a lot since she wasn't allowed at his house ("isn’t it illegal to not invite people into your house?" she had asked him- the answer was no). she remembered the first time she brought him home. her brothers started wolf whistling and exclaiming the most ridiculous things. everything from 'aus has a booooyfriend!' to 'wasn’t that the kid in the park?' sort of thing. they finally left the two alone when they had some baseball to practice with her dad. her dad had then warned smartie that if he 'pulled any moves on my little girl, it would not be a happily ever after', as he said. keep in mind that the two of them were only ten years old and poor kid was freaked out of his mind. almost looked like he was going to pee in his pants or something. and they were in the kitchen trying to sneak some cookies when her mum saw the two, both on chairs and trying to reach the top shelf, only several inches away from actually grabbing the box. she did the whole routine of 'awww's! she would have pinched smartie's cheek if aus hadn't stopped her too! mygosh, wouldn’t that have been so awkward! aus tried to keep smartie away from their house, but really, when it came down to it, she was just punished much too often to really do anything too far away from home. not only that but they were ten years old and in the suburban area. there really wasn’t too much they could do.
so that's why on a summer evening, there was the two of them sitting nearby their favoite tree playing their game of truth or dare. lately, he had been getting some pretty awful ones. she overheard one of the prissy muggle girls talking about really bad dares that she would 'never do' and well, that gave her inspiration! smartie hadn’t been quite so lucky to play the game with her since they had been playing at this for ages now. she had him lick the toilet seat, eat a dead worm, hang on a tree upside down for five minutes, it had been sooo awesome to see him doing all of that. she loved it. of course there was pay back but frankly, she was the best at the game. she stuck her tongue out at him and grinned, "i didn’t think you’d be a chicken!" he was still trying to outdo her but that would never happen. she was master at the game of truth or dare. there was a pause and at first she thought he was demented for a moment before he spoke. and then when he spoke, she went over to him and put her hand against his forehead to double check he wasn't sick. now he sounded a bit demented. she crinkled her nose and made a face, "groooooss, now why would you ever say thaaaat?" she covered her mouth in disgust before she couldn’t help but smirk like she always did when she had a good idea. now why was it that she loved torturing poor smartie? she puckered her lips in an exaggerated fashion and make kissing noises, "i looooove you. i would ruuuun away with you forever and ever and ever!" she repeated over and over again before bursting into laughs at her own joke. she puckered up once more when there was a shout that made her jump. "OY! you’re gonna kiss ‘em aus? i thought you’d have better taste than that, baby sister," brian popped out and grinned, messing her hair up. with brian there, jason wasn’t too far behind. "you two playing t or d again? hey scotty boy, i dare you to kiss ‘er," jay smirked before the two of them disappeared beyond the trees. of course they would make things awkward. that's when one of those thoughts went inside her head and she was suddenly curious. she never been kissed before. why did it feel like? she couldn’t help it 'cause the next thing blurted out was,
"you heard him. i dare you to kiss me."
