distinguishing features:
none
style:
She keeps her black hair at a medium length—long enough to tie back but short enough to not be too much of a daily hassle. Her russet brown eyes are her favorite physical aspect of herself, so she draws attention to them with dark eyeliner and eye shadow. Aside from that bit of make-up, she tends to dress plainly, choosing simple silver jewelry that stands out against her customary black robes. When not at her job, she prefers to dress in a way that could pass for either wizard or Muggle, simple styles in solid colors and subdued tones. Without a single pair of heels in her closet, she stands by the idea that if needed, she should be able and ready to run at any time.

personality:
The first thing to understand about Adelaide is that she is an introvert. Other people are okay for short periods or at a distance, but she would much rather stand back and watch the world happen around her. It’s not that she hates people; she just doesn’t always have much faith in them. She prefers plants to people. They don’t mind if she goes about her work in silence, and they don’t demand more attention than they deserve. Too much noise is overwhelming, and she needs silence to sort through her thoughts, so she greatly treasures the time she can devote to her plants.
She is always making comparisons like that—plants versus people—because to her, the world is black and white. Right and wrong. Yes and no. Truth and lie. Things are much less complex than most people make them out to be. She is the person to go to for an outside perspective, someone to objectively weigh both sides of an argument. She is very emotionally grounded and not prone to outbursts, causing her to look disdainfully at people who wear their hearts on their sleeves. She is honest to a fault and so is very bad at lying, since she hasn’t had much practice at it.
Despite all her apparent issues with people, she does in fact have a chipper attitude most of the time. And no matter what more sociable people may say, no, she is not shy, and no, she does not need to be brought “out of her shell.”

history:
Adelaide Kirsch was born in Kufstein, a little town situated in a valley in the Austrian Alps. She was born into a pureblood German wizarding family and grew up the only child of Rudolf and Therese Kirsch. Their family was rather small and unobtrusive, not counted among one of the major bloodlines regardless of their pureblood status because of their relative lack of ambition in the world of high society. Her father owned and managed a few stores in Munich’s wizarding community, so he was often out of the house, but her mother didn’t work, so she was able to stay home and care for Adelaide. Despite her mother’s involvement in her life, being an only child led Adelaide to solitary pursuits as she grew up. She took up running on the nearby forest paths. Her time spent in the forests on the foothills of the mountains fostered a love of growing things that carried on to adulthood.
When it came time for school, she attended Durmstrang, as both her parents had. She matured quickly there. Durmstrang cultivated in her a strong work ethic and strengthened her innate sense of independence. She excelled at history classes and developed a talent for learning and remembering trivia and obscure historical facts.
After finishing school at seventeen, she moved to Innsbruck, a larger city in the Alps near her hometown. Not really having a clear plan for her future or an idea of what career she wanted to pursue, she chose to take some odd jobs around the city. Through these part-time jobs, she strengthened her language skills and taught herself how to fit partly into Muggle society.
Barely a month after making the move to the big city, she got an owl from her father with news from home. Her mother had left him. According to him, their marriage had never been the most stable of relationships, but when they had had Adelaide, they decided to stay together for her sake. Now, with their daughter grown up and moved out of the house, Therese had finally made the decision to go. Rudolf managed to convince Adelaide not to move back home but to continue to pursue her own life. After that, she always went home during holidays to be with her father.
As months turned into years, she began to develop a sense of what she wanted to do. Through her various jobs, she interacted more and more with tourists from all over the world. Realizing she had only ever experienced two places, Austria and Durmstrang, she began to become interested in other cultures. The local university offered languages courses that she took advantage of. When she heard about the job opening for librarian at Hogwarts University, it played directly into her newfound interests. It would afford her the chance to see a different country and a wonderful way to utilize her English language skills. She was reluctant at first to leave Innsbruck, but that was overcome by her curiosity to see how this community worked and how this famous school could be different from her own experience.

As soon as she had been officially accepted for the librarian position, Adelaide had rushed out and bought Hogwarts, A History. The book boasted the most comprehensive collection of facts about the ancient school, and it had proved to be most informative. She had hoped it had been update to include information about the relatively new university, and she wasn’t disappointed. No doubt having an understanding of the school’s past would help her get acquainted with the place more quickly. It certainly had at Durmstrang. Belonging to a family who had attended Durmstrang for generations, she felt she knew it inside and out before she once stepped foot on the grounds. She could have navigated the corridors with her eyes closed, using only the stories of her family to guide her. As a first year she had scoffed at the first-generation students who were surprised at every corner and got lost on their way to classes for the entire first week. Even though she had done as much research as she could to try to be prepared, now she was the one out of her element, but she hoped her arrival wouldn’t make her feel like a first year again.
After a few Apparation hops—from Innsbruck to Munich to Berlin to London—she finally arrived in the middle of the Scottish countryside. The setting sun gave a red tinge to the normally vibrant green landscape. At her feet lay the end of a long dirt path that led straight up to the school. She had already known she wouldn’t be able to Apparate directly into the grounds; in fact, she had anticipated even a longer walk ahead of her. As many security measures as she had recently learned Hogwarts had, Durmstrang had more. Even without any looming threat, Durmstrang had been cautious and guarded its secrets closely. She smiled to herself. She would have fun exploring the secrets of this place.
She walked the path quickly, unencumbered as she was, her luggage sent ahead of her and most likely already in her rooms. She took her wand from her pocket and raised it as she approached the gates, thinking to tap the metal and alert someone that she was here. Then she caught sight of a blonde witch standing to one side of the gates. Adelaide lowered her wand and gave the woman her best smile.
“Evening. I’m Adelaide Kirsch, the new librarian.” It was nice of someone to be there to welcome her, and it avoided awkward circumstances, like if she hadn’t been able to get in at all.
